It was September 9, 1998, a cool overcast day in Amsterdam when I left my hotel and walked a short distance up the street to the north side of the Prinsengracht canal where it intersects the Reguliersgracht canal. I stopped at the railing as this barge came out from under the arch on the far left. After the barge had cleared the bridge, the pilot brought the stern around directly below me and in that moment I realized I should have started taking pictures when they first came into view. That way I'd have gotten images that told a story about the crew of a canal boat navigating an extremely tight and narrow turn. As it was, I waited until this point when they were already midway through maneuvering to turn up into Reguliersgracht canal which is the well lit waterway visible toward the top of the frame. |
